Stefan Scholtz (Ste Fwon)
Who
Born 1983 in Germany, uprooted at an early age, lived in 7 different countries altogether, lost count of how often I've moved house (don't ask me where my 'home' is, I don't know the answer). Always active as a kid - sports, martial arts etc. I discovered hip-hop as a teenager, through graffiti and rap. Breaking would soon follow.
Where & when
My journey started after seeing a breaking competition on TV in 2001. I got curious about the moves, went to classes in the small town in France where I lived at the time, and practiced with friends in high school. Over the next years, university studies and life choices took me to Newcastle, UK, and Shanghai, China, where I got my first taste of the scene and lifestyle, saw many different styles, grew more passionate about hip-hop and breaking by the day, and decided stop messing around and involve myself more actively, not just for kicks. I linked up with BTC in 2005 after coming back from my exchange year... lucky for me, because I learned a lot about the culture and attitude from them since them. We trained and hung out together for some time, during which we got to know each other better as well, and I became a crew member in 2007.
I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to represent, teach, battle, perform, judge and travel with this bunch of crazy Irish dudes for the past years. And while I don't know where breaking will lead me to in the future... it's the journey, not the destination, that matters.
Why
I dance because of all the things that breaking is to me - art, individuality, letting loose, madness, passion, anger, a rush, a haze, straight dumb luck, ups and downs, pain, frustration, determination, conflict, therapy, inner peace, performance, elation, laughter, pure joy, expression, creation, connection and communication, teaching, learning, sharing, belonging, discovering, giving back, making friends for life, experiencing, living...
What else
Outside of dancing, I love foreign languages, having had to pick up quite a few of them over the years, and I work as a professional translator/interpreter. Other things I like include, but are not limited to: hanging out with friends and fam, traveling, reading, social and cultural anthropology, cooking, drawing, sports, martial arts, animé, cinema and the small screen, music of all genres, gaming, origami, the internet, bad jokes, throwing things. I also have pretty terrible eyesight.
